The Senior Director, Government Relations develops advocacy tools to support ASHP-affiliated state societies in advocating policy before state legislative and regulatory bodies on issues affecting health-system pharmacy. Communicates to state affiliates using a variety of media. What You'll Be Doing at ASHP:

  • Serves as primary Government Relations liaison to The Pharmacy Technician Society
    1. Leads development of state advocacy proposals related to technician licensure, advanced technician roles, professionalization of the technician workforce.
    2. Supports the leadership of The Pharmacy Technician Society in developing advocacy priorities for the organization, in coordination with the vice president of government relations.
    3. Develops and distributes advocacy communications tailored to the needs and interests of pharmacy technicians and The Pharmacy Technician Society.
    4. Coordinates the advocacy activities of The Pharmacy Technician Society with the ASHP government relations team.
  • Leads Government Relations engagement with schools of pharmacy and student societies
    1. Coordinates advocacy engagement to deans of schools of pharmacy regarding advocacy activities.
    2. Creates opportunities for schools of pharmacy to endorse and voice support for ASHP advocacy positions.
    3. Provides training and support to student societies to encourage their participation in ASHP advocacy.
    4. Creates supporting resources (e.g., talking points, phone banking scripts, testimony, op-eds) for schools of pharmacy and student societies to engage in states and federal advocacy.
  • State legislative and regulatory advocacy.
    1. Promotes and implements ASHP's mission and strategic plan by assisting affiliated state societies to advocate ASHP policy through its government affairs programs. Provide strategic advice on state legislative and regulatory issues to state society leaders and staff, including legislative committee members. Develop advocacy skills of state leaders to effectively promote policy changes at the state level.
    2. Guides affiliated state societies in advocating ASHP policy before state legislative and regulatory bodies. 
    3. Coordinates with other associations and health system advocacy functions to increase the impact of ASHP’s state advocacy efforts.
    4. Develops advocacy tools to support state society advocacy efforts, coordinating within the Office of Government Relations and Affiliate Relations, including the development of testimony, statements, comments and other advocacy materials.
    5. Develops and distributes background material on state-level health-system pharmacy issues to assist state societies in developing testimony and statements. Serves as an information resource and clearinghouse on these issues. 
    6. Communicates and advises affiliated state societies on an ongoing basis to assist their efforts to affect health policy at the state level. Coordinates with state societies in providing data, experience and perspectives on individual state issues. 
    7. Serves as liaison and represents ASHP at annual meetings of the National Conference of State Legislatures and the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. 
  • Meets regularly with the vice president, government relations to establish state advocacy priorities.
  • Attends meetings and briefings pertinent to ASHP’s public policy initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You Bring To ASHP:

  • Requires a minimum of a degree plus a working knowledge of the theories and principles of grassroots and government affairs.
  • PharmD preferred
  • Requires a minimum of two years of prior related work experience.
  • Minimum two years’ successful experience working in a congressional or government affairs office of a trade or professional association.
  • Successful experience supporting cross-functional teams in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Awareness of pharmacy advocacy and clinical issues desirable
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, including tracking and coordinating activities and setting and adhering to deadlines.
